We’re Going to Disney Countdown Chain

One of the things I find most enjoyable about planning a Disney vacation is the countdown to the trip! Ask any Disney fan and they’ll tell you at one point or another they have done some sort of countdown, whether it was a ticker on a website, Xs on a calendar, or something more creative. One popular countdown item is a paper chain, where you cut of one link of the chain everyday until your departure date arrives. It’s a fun way to get excited for a trip.

Countdown chains are also excellent for creating an element of surprise for your family. By creating a chain without telling everyone where  the trip is going, you create even more excitement for the big day. Here I am going to show you how to make a surprise countdown chain.

First thing you are going to need is some basic supplies – paper, scissors or trimmer, tape or some form of adhesive, and some stickers to embellish the header card.

Start with piece of paper about 8” x 12” and fold it in half to make the header card. Decorate the front of the card with your surprise message and some stickers. The stickers could hint at the final destination or be a completely unrelated theme. On the inside of the card put the name of where you are going. Tape the bottom of the card closed to keep the location a secret. Create a slit near the bottom of the card to thread the first chain link though.

For the chain links, cut a 6” x 1” strip of paper for every day you need to countdown.  I only did 14 days, but you can do as many as you want! Make the chain run through your entire house if you desire! Add a sticker, die cut, or handwrite a number on each strip of paper. Thread link #1 through the slit in the header card and tape the link together. Thread link #2 through #1 and so on until you have all your links connected.

Now hang up your countdown chain and rip or cut off one link every day! Watch the excitement build as you countdown to the big day!

We too love to countdown. Of course, my kids are 6, 4 and 3, so it is also a great way to teach numbers, as well as create excitement for our upcoming trip. I used my Cricut machine to create ours, which the kids helped with. It was a great family project!

What a fantastic idea! And a great way to use up scraps! I always have leftover strips from cardmaking! When is my next trip? :-)

What an awesome idea! This would even work great for a countdown to a holiday using Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas paper.
