Babycakes NYC Takes the Cake

Babycakes NYC is a vegan bakery specializing in gluten-free, egg-free, refined sugar-free, wheat-free, casein-free, and kosher baked goods. Whew – that’s a lot of frees.

The list of “frees” and especially vegan didn’t sound very appealing to this mom who grew up in a meat and potatoes household and uses butter, heavy cream, and sugar liberally. The only experience I’ve had with restricted diets is with my sister-in-law who must have a gluten-free diet. Having married into an Italian family where pasta is a prerequisite to every meal, her rice pasta seemed edible at best. So, it’s with these preconceived notions that I tried some goodies at Babycakes NYC in Downtown Disney.

I am a convert.

Let me start at the beginning. I’m always reading up on the latest Disney news and I noted with interest that Babycakes NYC was going to be opening in Downtown Disney, where the old McDonald’s used to stand. I even read some reviews but there was one that really piqued my interest. If you know anything about Chris from Everything Walt Disney World, you know she is an avid and well-practiced baker; basically she knows what she’s talking about if flour, sugar, and chocolate are part of the conversation. Chris was impressed with the offerings at Babycakes DTD and the skill of the bakers. After reading her review, a visit to this vegan bakery was added to my must-do list for our May trip.

It was snack time at Downtown Disney so we headed over to Pollo Campero in the Marketplace. I thought Babycakes NYC was located next door and had a moment of self-doubt when I didn’t see any signs indicating where it was located; I even looked on the DTD map and couldn’t find it. I decided to check inside Pollo Campero and boy was I glad I did. Babycakes NYC was a freestanding counter inside the building.

The hard part came next. Should we choose a cookie, doughnut, cupcake, or cinnamon roll? I’m a sucker for chocolate and doughnuts so the winners were a chocolate crunch doughnut and a cookie cream sandwich. I was intrigued by how “cream” could be used in a vegan bakery and wanted to give it a try. After making our purchase, we headed to an outside table to taste our snacks.

Let me get to (or not) the cookie cream sandwich. After getting settled at the table, I needed to head back inside for a drink for my son. When I returned, the cookie sandwich was a casualty of my husband’s hunger and I didn’t have a chance of sample it. He assured me it was delicious, though!

The chocolate crunch doughnut is one of the best, if not the best, Walt Disney World snack I can remember having. It just plain tastes delicious, whether it is vegan or not. Really delicious. All too often bakery goods taste only of sugar and fat (especially that weird oil that leaves a chemical aftertaste in your mouth). The Babycakes NYC doughnut stands out because it tastes homemade, in a very light, very fresh, very tasty way. It tastes the way a good doughnut should.

Next time you’re at Downtown Disney, be sure to stop at Babycakes NYC. Don’t think of it as a vegan bakery – think of it as the place to get the best doughnut you’ve ever eaten.

So glad you liked it Lisa! We tried a cupcake top from there on our last trip and were not impressed. Maybe they were just having an off day that day.

Lynn, so sorry you didn’t have the greatest experience. I don’t like things overly sweet so I enjoyed the balance.

We tried Babycakes in April and it was fantastic! DD has tons of allergies and she was so excited to have a sweet treat that actually tastes like a real treat!

Did you see they can FedEx them to you, Tiffany? It could become an addiction…. :)

Yay Babycakes! Like you I was skeptical at first because of the long list of frees, but I found it to be delicious! My mom and I are allergic to gluten and we were so happy that we could have treats that taste like the ones that we miss. So glad you had such a great experience!

I just wish the opened up locations in other theme parks since we don’t get to Downtown Disney all that often! Thanks for reading, Hannah.
