Reviewing the Great Piggy Bank Adventure

Epcot’s Innoventions is home to many exhibits and hands on games that are not only fun, but educational, which was Walt’s original hope for Epcot.  Not really knowing what to expect as financial games are not always the most exciting thing in the world, on our last trip to Epcot, we took the kiddo to see what it was all about!

T. Rowe Price, the financial company, teamed with Disney to create this great interactive game about financial planning!  I was pleasantly surprised to discover it was really fun for the entire family.  You can play solo, up to three people or in groups and the goal is pretty simple, choose a financial goal and then play a few different savings games that teach you important aspects about investing and savings!

This is a great experience for everyone but especially kids, as the hands on, interactive games are great way to get kids involved with savings especially in the current economy.  There are three games to try your hand at, and after them all, you take your pig to see if you have saved enough to meet your goal of a vacation or college savings!  The first game is the easiest one but it doesn’t start that way for long, as you control angled levers to send falling coins into buckets for savings and spending and everything changes positions as the game progresses.  After that, you get your pig and head on to the next station.

Moving on to the second game, you place your savings on the line and use massive joysticks to try to navigate the ever changing streams of inflation!  This in my opinion is the most difficult game, as it requires each person to work together!  Lots of ways to lose your money here as the joysticks all control the same thing and majority rules!  Moving on to the final game, you have to hide (invest) your money in different areas with different profit margins.  The catch is that the wolf that has been trying to screw things up throughout all the games has returned and will randomly take some of your investments, so you learn the importance of diversifying where you put your money!

At the end, you take your Piggy Bank to get weighed and you find out if you’ve saved enough to reach the goal you set out to achieve!  Overall this was much more fun than I originally thought it would be and I have played it a couple times sense then.  If you have kid (and even if you don’t) you owe it to yourself to check out this exhibit next time you’re in Epcot’s Innoventions.  There’s an online version of the game you can find here, as well as the official website for the Innoventions Exhibit!
