Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics

Friday July 27, 2012, I sat down to watch the Opening Ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics with my Mom. We were curious as to see what kind of “show” there would be. I normally don’t watch the games during the summer Olympics, as I prefer the winter sports to watch. I enjoyed the opening ceremony though, especially catching so many Disney references throughout!

I had been following along earlier in the day on Twitter from some of my Disney friends who live in the UK and were able to watch the ceremony “live” and tweeted about “Disney fans will LOVE the children’s lit section“. It made me curious!

There were quite a number of “Disney” references that I caught…first there was a live shot of a horse in the Scotland sequence that looked VERY much like Angus from Brave! Next, there was an Omnibus…which I swear I have seen before in Epcot and The Magic Kingdom! Then in the “Industrial Revolution” segment, many women were wearing sashes proclaiming them to be “women suffragettes” and “vote for women”….hm…a very catchy Mary Poppins song popped in my head there!! Then came the children’s literature segment, and they referenced Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Cruella DeVil, 101 Dalmatians, Alice in Wonderland, and Mary Poppins!!

Now, while all these references were made because they have their history with English authors or people that lived in England at the time, I smiled that soo many of the popular movies we have enjoyed for the past 70 years or so have been possible because of these wonderful and talented authors, who thankfully, Walt Disney and his creative team were able to work with and establish rights and such to be able to develop them and distribute them in new mediums or animation and live action! I loved though how Walt always would dedicate these works to their proper authors and not take credit for creating them himself!

I followed along throughout the night on Twitter, and so many of my Disney friends were also enjoying the many Disney references throughout the show! Plus, let’s not forget how much fun it is to look at the Olympic rings and find a HIDDEN MICKEY!! :)  You just never know where you can find Disney in your life!

Leave me a comment below if you noticed any other Disney references throughout the Opening Ceremonies that I may of missed!! Thanks so much and have a magical day!!
