In High School, there was the group of cool kids on the edge of fashion that everyone aspired to be a part of. They weren’t concerned about what others thought of them, had a independant outlook and appeared to have the greatest time throughout their school years. That one day, when I got the courage, and tried to join them at the lunch table, I was of course shrugged off with a “So. . . Like, totally get lost, dork!” (It was the 80’s after all) But, how could I be upset, they did have their standards, after all. They were still cool. Fast forward many years and I happen to be listening to a podcast and I realized something. I swear that Jennifer and Lisa of the Those Darn Cats podcast were in that group of cool kids! No, not really. I have never met Those Darn Cats, but I get that same ‘staring across the room in awe’ feeling whenever they let me into their world through their recordings.
That’s my philosophical view of this podcast, but let me tell you why. It’s hard to believe, but at one time there was no female podcasters. There were only names like Ricky, Jesse, Paul, Jeff, Aaron, Earl, Lou, Nathan. No Disney podcasts had the word ‘Moms’ or ‘Minxes’ in their title, let alone women as part of the discussions. Sure, a couple came and went, but it wasn’t until Those Darn Cats did we get an entirely female perspective on the world of Disney. And a whole new world was opened up as a result. Disney Dooney & Bourke purses was in the same league as just about everything in the Art of Disney store. But again, another podcast has cost me dearly, for I absolutely needed to get my wife her first purse and clutch as an anniversary gift purely based on the Cats devotion for the brand. Thoughts on Anne Leibovitz Dream photos, recognizing our Disney Talismans and how Disney can ease our mid life crises are themes you won’t find touched on anywhere else. To run a Disney marathon, if they can, hey I can train for that too! Club 33, well that will never happen for me, but I can press my nose against the glass as this extravagant eating experience and its tiny souvenir case is discussed.
A great life story has evolved with this podcast. Lisa & Trace began a relationship that progressed to its eventual Cinderella moment. But that ‘Cinderella’ cliche is exactly the opposite angle that Lisa wanted in her wedding. As you can imagine, the term ‘Bridezilla’ took on a whole new meaning as I heard about the wedding plans. Nonetheless, it was a great listen and a noteworthy event for the Disney Community.
And how can I mention the Cats without at least throwing a line to Jennifer’s son, the Whatcahmacallit. I have heard his voice deepen over the years and respected his opinion on how Disney video games, movies and the brand as a whole is viewed by Generation “Z”. Agree with him or not, he’s an interesting listen.
As you can tell, this is a lunch table I want to sit at. This is the cool kids podcast on the edge of fashion, that doesn’t go along with everybody else, and is having the greatest time. I just hope that when I see them at Pecos Bill’s they will let me sit with them.
