Goodbye “Ellen’s Energy Adventure” , Hate to See Ya Go. It’s been a Long Ride, 45 minutes to be Exact.

Goodbye Ellen! We will miss Ya!

It has been confirmed as of July 15, 2017 that the Universe of Energy attraction at EPCOT will close on August 13, 2017 for good! Ellen’s Energy Adventure will be replaced by a Guardians of the Galaxy Attraction with no completion date suggested yet.

I have been a big fan of this ride since I first went on it in 2000.  I have many fun memories from this attraction and have seen 2 versions of it. Pre-Ellen and with Ellen!  It has come to be one of my go-to,  cool down and rejuvenate rides. I get to relax for 45 minutes in a cool dark area and possibly take a short nap if I need to. It usually happened during the KNRG news time Theatre II Film.

I remembered the Ford “Magic Skyway” attraction at the 1964 World’s Fair that I saw when I was five. This ride had to be related to the “Ellen” ride, especially the animatronic dinosaurs.  In fact, I found out my background search that Disney World borrowed a few ideas from the 1964 ride.

Ellen’s Energy Adventure” replaced the original 1982 version after attendance dropped because the tone was too serious. It was decide that the pavilion required some much needed rejuvenation and updating. Who better else to teach us about energy than Ellen, Bill Nye and Alex Trebeck with some help from Dr. Judy Peterson and Albert Einstein (relatively speaking).  There’s even a short cameo by Michael Richards who played Kramer in Seinfeld. The same traveling theater system  used by the original Universe of Energy show was kept as is, but the video was updated and the rotating Radok screens were taken out.

I loved the campiness of the pre-show and the 3 other short films. I have fond memories of “Dream Ellen” and “Bill Nye, the Science guy” putting hearing protectors on Ellen and saying “‘Cause it’s … the Big Bang!” and she responds  “The Piggy Bank, The ding-dang“.  Always gave me a chuckle. What a fun way to teach us about energy. The use of Jeopardy was a very wise choice to show the many different sources of energy. It’s all around us, in the solar, wind, geothermal, hydrogen, tidal, wave, hydroelectric, biomass, nuclear and fossil fuels. Sounds boring but Ellen made it fun and exciting and we will miss her dearly.

Trivia Note: As the seats moved into the last theater. Jeopardy! music played and the announcer said If you would like to have your own energy nightmare, place a self-addressed, stamped envelope under your pillow, or check us out on the web at www dot energynightmare dot game.”. This web site exists! Go to it and if you get 100% you can suggest your own trivia question.

There are only a few days left for you last chance to see this wonderful attraction before it closes for good on 8/13/17. Remember Energy, you make the world go ’round”.  Goodbye Ellen! We love you.

I've been to every Disney Them Park in the world and have been to Disney World an estimate of 250 times, but more time than I can remember. Living in Orlando gives me the opportunity to visit as often as I want.
